What to Bring: Well-tuned bike, helmet, cycling gloves, water bottle and snack. Extra tube, repair tools and pump if you have them.
Can you do these rides?First off, these are 'no drop' bike rides. Meaning no one gets left behind. Sure, the group will spread out but we will make sure that we regroup and wait for the last cyclist in the group. These are social rides so we don't want to have someone cycling alone - you can do that on your own.
These rides are run in cooperation with Flatirons Athletic Club and are geared for both the beginner and the intermediate cyclist. For these two rides we will have two ride leaders. Our plan is to have both a beginner ride and an intermediate ride. David Clair, Director of Fitness For Living, will be one of the ride leaders.
Here are short descriptions summarizing what we see as a beginner and intermediate rider:
Beginner rider:
A cyclist who feels comfortable riding at a pace of 15MPH or less for extended (60 minute +) periods of time on flat roads or rolling hills. A beginner may also be someone with limited or no experience riding in a group setting, being in a pace line, or otherwise. A beginner cyclist may or may not carry the tools necessary for road repairs including spare tube, patch kit, etc., and might not know how to perform road side repairs such as fixing a flat tire.
Intermediate rider: A cyclist who feels comfortable riding at a pace of 15MPH-18MPH for extended periods of time and is comfortable climbing hills of varying length and elevation. An intermediate cyclist would also have experience riding in groups which could include pace lines. Additionally, an intermediate cyclist carries the tools necessary for road repairs including spare tube, patch kit, etc. and knows how to use them.
